Movie Monday: Ghost Bird documentary
Ghost Bird (2009)
Directed by Scott Crocker
On May 1st, 2010 during a business trip to New York City, I took my husband to see Ghost Bird at Anthology Film Archives. "Ghost Bird" was screened as part of Anthology's For the Birds series with director Scott Crocker in attendance. After the movie, while strolling the East Village, we were informed a car bomb was planted in Times Square. Walking back to our hotel, my Dear Husband reflected on the irony of his life being spared from a possible terrorist attack because he was stuck watching a woodpecker documentary with his wife. Naturally, "Ghost Bird" has sentimental value in our relationship.
"Ghost Bird" is a documentary about the quest by birders to spot the elusive Ivory-billed Woodpecker, the Holy Grail for bird watchers. The film is set in Brinkley, Arkansas and chronicles the small town's rise to fame with the unconfirmed sighting of an Ivory-billed Woodpecker. The woodpecker brings good luck and good fortune to the humble residents of Brinkley. "Ghost Bird" challenges the notion of seeing is believing and becomes a fascinating lesson in ornithology and human nature. Director Scott Crocker keeps non-birders interested by mixing film genres. "Ghost Bird" is part mystery movie, comedy and nature documentary rolled into one.
Ghost Bird is available on DVD and Netflix Instant
