Movie Monday: Like Crazy
Like Crazy (2011)
Directed by Drake Doremus
Starring Anton Yelchin and Felicity Jones
Me and the Dear Husband went to see Like Crazy because we heard the entire film was shot on a Canon 7D HDSLR camera. I was more interested in the technical aspects of the film (i.e., cinematography, sound, editing) rather than the love story. Luckily, the wonderful actors and Drake Doremus's disciplined directing style make "Like Crazy" a touching romantic film.
"Like Crazy" tells the story of a young couple in love, forced to make decisions before they are ready. Anton Yelchin's performance as Jacob grounds the film and actress Felicity Jones, indie cinema's new ingenue, shines as Anna. The film takes places during the characters' transition from college into adult/professional life. A time of insecurity, but also of romantic optimism. Jacob and Anna fall in love before graduation and right before Anna's student visa expires. As adults, they try to maintain a long distance relationship while pursuing their professional dreams, but constant separation proves difficult.
"Like Crazy" feels young and genuine and has a charm that reminded of Sofia Coppola's Lost in Translation. It is a film worth seeing for its modern love story and for its technical merits (camera geek).

Scenes from a Sansei Thanksgiving
Our family had a fun and relaxing Thanksgiving dinner at my Auntie's house. This Thanksgiving was stress free since Auntie cooked the turkey and hosted dinner for our extended family. Four generations (Nisei, Sansei, Yonsei & Gosei) celebrated potluck style. Here are photos of a typical Japanese-American Thanksgiving Dinner:
Sushi plate
Carved turkey
My Dear Husband's famous stuffing
Shoyu chicken
Homemade cheese rolls
Cousin's fruit plate with fruits from Nijiya Market
Pumpkin squares dessert
Grandma's Broken Glass Jello
(In Japanese-American/Hawaiian culture - Jello is a food group)
Hope you and your family had a wonderful Thanksgiving Holiday with lots of turkey, sushi and Jello!

Woody Allen: A Documentary (2011)

I am a Woody Allen fan. "Manhattan," "Annie Hall," and "Hannah and Her Sisters" are my favorite Allen films. Tonight PBS American Masters airs Part 2 of a documentary on Woody Allen. Check local PBS listings for time.

Movie Monday: The Trip
The Trip (2010)
Directed by Michael Winterbottom
Starring Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon
I am a big fan of Michael Winterbottom. His mockumentary 24 Hour Party People (2002) about Factory Records is a hilarious homage to rave culture and cult band Joy Division. Tristram Shandy: A Cock and Bull Story (2005) is Winterbottom's behind the scenes comedy about film production and Brit Lit adaptations.
"The Trip" a BBC television series was released theatrically in the US. In "The Trip," Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon play themselves as actors turned food critics on foodie road trip in Northern England. "The Trip" plays like the four star restaurant version of Bourdain's No Reservations with Michael Caine and Al Pacino impressions.
I particularly enjoyed Coogan and Brydon's introspection on 40-something midlife crisis and laughed out loud hearing Coogan's philosophy on "genius versus mediocrity."
"The Trip" is a buddy road movie for those who have tasted molecular gastronomy, find Coleridge romantic and appreciate a little Woody Allen thrown in for laughs.
The Trip is available on Netflix Instant, DVD, Amazon VOD, and iTunes

Movie Monday: West Side Story
West Side Story (1961)
Directed by Robert Wise and Jerome Robbins
Music by Leonard Bernstein
Lyrics by Stephen Sondheim
For my daughter's homework assignment, she had to watch a DVD musical and write a dance report. She had never seen "West Side Story" so I recommended the film for her report and we watched it together. This was the best homework assignment - ever!
I haven't seen the film in years and they don't make 'em like they used to. "West Side Story" is a musical love story based on "Romeo and Juliet" with a social commentary on race and class in America. The film was made in 1961 but feels so modern and relevant in 2011.
For its 50th Anniversary, Fathom Events will screen "West Side Story" in select theaters on November 9th.
MGM will release the 50th Anniversary edition of West Side Story on Blu-Ray November 15.
